Afro Kids Paris began with the birth of our son.

He is growing up in an Afropean family, with the African culture of his father and the European culture of his mother. These two heritages may be different, but we believe they are also deeply connected and complementary.

His birth encouraged us to think about how children build their identity when they grow up between several cultures.

How can we help a child understand their roots without feeling that they must choose between them? How can we help them feel represented, proud of their heritage and comfortable with every part of who they are?

Afro Kids Paris grew from these questions and from our wish to create something useful for families who share the same thoughts and experiences.

We want children to grow up feeling proud of their roots and knowing that different cultures can live together, communicate and enrich one another.

Passing on culture and knowledge is at the heart of Afro Kids Paris.

We believe that learning about their history, cultures and heritage helps children understand who they are.

Whether a child has one cultural identity or several, they should have the opportunity to explore it, make it their own and live with confidence.

Knowing where we come from does not decide where we are going. It gives us the foundations we need to move forward, make our own choices and shape our future freely.

We highlight the educational value of the cultural activities we share.

We do not only look at what an event offers. We also consider what children may learn and take away from it: new knowledge, an emotion, a different way of seeing the world or the desire to discover more.

Our aim is for every child to leave a cultural experience having discovered, felt or understood something new.

Afro Kids Paris highlights places that are directly connected to African and Afro cultures, as well as Afro-friendly spaces that welcome families and celebrate cultural diversity.

We want to feature places that create connections, share stories and bring people together around Afro cultures, while remaining open and welcoming to every family.

Representation is an essential part of our work.

We want children from Afro backgrounds, especially those growing up with more than one cultural heritage, to see themselves reflected in the stories, artists, places and experiences around them.

Afro Kids Paris is also for children who discover these cultures through a member of their family, their friends, their classmates or their wider community.

We believe representation helps children understand and build their own identity. It also helps everyone understand differences, family experiences and the richness of having more than one cultural identity.

For us, a cultural event is first and foremost an experience to be lived.

Through the way we present events, we encourage families to go beyond simply attending an activity. Children should be able to observe, take part, ask questions and experience their emotions fully.

An exhibition, a show, a walk or a workshop can become an opportunity for discovery, conversation and sharing culture as a family.

We want to make cultural experiences easier for families to access.

We bring together essential information, offer useful guidance to parents and explain what each experience may bring to a child.

Our role is to help families find experiences suited to their children’s ages, interests and individual needs.

We chose Paris and London because each city has its own strong cultural identity. They also share something important: visible and active Afro communities that are part of the cities’ neighbourhoods and everyday life.

Through these two cities, Afro Kids Paris aims to create a cultural bridge.

We want to share ideas, celebrate inspiring initiatives and highlight the work of artists, organisations, cultural venues and community leaders who pass on Afro cultures with commitment and creativity.

Afro Kids Paris helps families discover experiences that encourage curiosity, representation and the passing on of culture.

Because every cultural experience can become an opportunity to understand ourselves, understand others and grow together.
